self-portrait: dancer on a film strip

  1. is a great idea!! ilustration and portrait by collage

    thanks for visit!

  2. love your sketches!
the pink and green color scheme works well with the colage. Especially on the wood pulls the color scheme together even more!

  3. Hi there Alison. :) Thanks for the visit. You asked me about advice on starting up shop and the best advice I could give would be to join SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators). They have a lot of conferences on how-tos whether they be business related or craft related. It's nice to have a support group and it's nicer to have a better understanding of what you are doing and to know where you are headed.

The second thing that I would do would be to figure out where you fit in the illustration world. (Magazines for Young Adults), Early Readers, Picture Books? Then find out as much as you can about that genre. What are the Art Directors looking for in Picture Book (Usually a lot of kids, animals, and some black and white illustrations.)

Thirdly, what I like to do is identify my favorite artists and figure out what makes them so great. Good composition, nice color palette, nice design? Try to incorporate those good things.

Good luck Alison! You will do great if you keep your nose to the grindstone. (I gotta work on all these things too)

Phew.. that was a lot to say.

    Take Care!!
